THE REFORMATION OF THE CHURCHES

Professor Louba, for many years professor of psychology at Bryn Mavr College, had a great interest in religion and also a violent distaste for many of the beliefs and practices traditionally associated with religion. In this book, the manuscript of which was virtually completed at the time of his death in 1946, Professor Leuba calls for a thoroughgoing reformation of the Churches by adopting a naturalistic philosophy which would be in harmony with modern science, through the development of techniques appropriate to such a philosophy. Professor Leuba bases his arguments upon the statistical proof he offers that the belief in a supernatural God is rejected by a large and increasing majority of the leaders of the land. He calls for the transformation of Churches into ethical societies which would employ- for the transformation of individuals- the principles and techniques of the social scientist and the psychologist. While few of any faith would agree with the author's central theses, all would profit by a reading of this searching criticism of the existing Churches, their beliefs and practices.
