GEORGE AND MARTHA RISE AND SHINE

Five more tiny stories about Marshall's absurdly bloated-looking hippos—who though not blind to each other's foibles, are admirably indulgent. Martha is tactfully understanding when she catches poor George fibbing about his past exploits or hiding in a scary movie; her own embarrassment is brought about by more agressive behavior—literally pushing George, bed and all, to a morning picnic when he would rather sleep and then falling asleep herself when they get there, or, at the end, forcing herself into George's secret clubhouse only to find that it's a "Martha Fan Club." This last makes George look a bit sappy to us, but never mind. To see Martha carrying a dainty pocketbook or hopping on her pogo stick, or George rump end up among the seats at the movie house or leaping onto the chandelier (and off the top of the page) at the sight of a snake, is to recognize the sunny incongruity that made them a success.
