REVEILLE FOR REBELS

Subtitled A Book for Americans of Pre-Voting Age this is a series of brief essays, directed to young people, on current political topics. Warburg is a roving writer and lecturer who has talked to high school and college groups in almost every part of the U.S. and he deals here with the subjects which have seemed to be most interesting and most troublesome to students: some of the more dangerous aspects of the American ""way of life"": economic pressures toward conformity and the weaknesses of an economy in which avarice plays a large part; our political machinery and the possibility of altering it; prejudice and discrimination; abuses and pressures of minority groups; inflation, (in which he criticizes what he calls the fetish of balancing the budget); disarmament and the possibility of abolishing war; ""Preparing the U.S. for Peace""; the exercise of responsible citizenship in choosing a career; and finally, he indicates some current myths which have been considered axiomatic. There's certainly nothing here of a revolutionary nature but it might be of value to those students who don't read the newspapers and he does suggest a number of more comprehensive books.
