Some 13 years of newspaper work in Japan and 61 days imprisonment gave the author an intimate inside picture of Japanese internal conditions. Here is a long term scrutiny of Japanese life, government, faith, customs, stories of cliques, of censorship, of revolution, of spy phobia. He discusses various aspects of that jumping bean life of a foreign correspondent --years he savored to the full, though today he feels that peace with Japan's present leaders is impossible. There has been very little written of late about Japan from within; a book such as this is enlightening and should sell, but there seems to be a resistance to books on Japan, except as it relates itself to the whole problem of the Far East.
