WHERE LIFE IS BETTER: An Unsentimental American Journey

Rorty claims himself Left Wing in tendency, but acknowledges that he was sent off on this tour of inspection by a capitalistic paper, The New York Evening Post. From East to West he went, trying to sense the spirit of the country toward the New Deal. He returned with a conviction that we were tending toward Fascism, and that everywhere was the growing conviction that another war was the remedy for all our ills. The threat he feels is from the East. One gets a definite sense of the sections through which he went, -- the steel mill sections, Chicago, the north central farm belt, the drought areas, California -- and home again. Good reading.
