IN THE DEEP SOUTH

A story of race conflicts -- the setting Birmingham -- the theme, the determination of the citizens to break up the friendship between a white and colored man. The Negro is framed -- acquitted -- but the friendship has involved the white man's sister and the break comes. A rather diffuse handling of a theme fraught with possibilities of emotional violence somewhat impersonal viewpoint -- none of the futility and hopelessness of the problem of Deep, Dark River. From light novels, the author has turned to a serious subject and handled it with intelligence and sanity. There is, however, somewhat a tendency to pull away from stories of race problems, so watch your sales, and order accordingly.
