PUBLIC HEALTH IN THE WORLD TODAY

By

Publisher: Harvard Univ. Press

A series of articles which together give a comprehensive, collective picture of public health today- what has already been & accomplished which falls far short of what still needs to be done. The introduction, by the editor, uses New York City's recent smallpox scare as an illustration of the lag between the discovery of useful information (in this case vaccination) and its practical application. Public health, its evolution and objectives; its opportunities- as a profession; the medical care needs of this country, and of others- Europe, the Far East, etc. Preventive medicine; the administration of the United States Public Health Service; the health programmes of the Navy, of the Veteran's Administration; children's health; and particular aspects such as nutrition, respiratory infections, industrial disease... Some of the articles are fairly specialized, statistical in presentation; others are of general accessibility; but the volume as a whole is designated towards a professional market.
