A storm brings a surprise visitor, Maynard McKinney, who, in the name of his powerful employer, begins with ruthless persistence to buy up all the property of the Island. At the last, the Island is saved when McKinney is unmasked as a well known swindler, but not before the behavior of people under intolerable financial and social pressure has been revealed.
