WILFRED THE RAT

Stooped, buck-toothed Wilfred is the picture of battered dejection when he arrives shivering at the closed-up amusement park; even in his dreams, he's ""being chased again by big dogs."" Then Wilfred meets squirrel Dwayne and chipmunk Rupert (""We hang around here"") and, in them, finds his first friends. Dwayne and Rupert show Wilfred all the pleasures of the park, but come summer when the people are slated to return and his friends leave for safer quarters, Wilfred chooses to stay and watch the fun. On his own then, Wilfred is chased by the owner's dog on opening night, and his frantic but spectacular leap from the roller coaster earns him a job offer as ""Daredevil Rat."" But ""it wouldn't be any fun being a star unless Dwayne and Rupert were around too,"" and so Wilfred joins his friends to wait in town until all three can return at summer's end. A winning choice, without a doubt--both for Wilfred and for the picture book audience who will take to this slack-bodied rat and delight in his good fortune.
