This for all its submergence in minutiae provided to convey atmosphere and the semblance of authenticity, is a fresh approach to Columbus' career through the record of an Andalusian youth who first sighted land on the voyage to the New World. Events in Juan Rodrigo's life number conflicts with the Inquisition and court- church venality, his introduction to new geographical ideas, witnessing the jealousies of the voyage crews and his own embroilment in them that sent him, a hating exile, to North Africa. The force of the story breaks occasionally but there is historical value in the adventure.
