A classic of the screen already, this story of two boys and a dog is here entirely rewritten (from the Saturday Evening Post rendition) for younger readers. The story of Lonnie, whose father is a bird dog trainer, and of the runt that he is given as his very own; of his darky comrade, and of how they train their dog so well that Lonnie has to break his point in the field trials, so as not to wreck his father's reputation. He breaks his dog's heart- and his own. A story in whatever form it appears that has a tremendous emotional appeal. Arthur Fuller has done the illustrations- I think he could have done a better job. A difficult book to place for the format (type face, etc.) indicate younger age rating than the vocabulary, the dialect and the story sustain. There is no writing down, praises be, and any red-blooded boy -- or girl -- who doesn't mind having his heart tangled a bit, will love this story of two boys and a dog.
