Short stories of young people of the middle class (Catholics for the most part, and the setting Chicago). Grimmer than the John Held stories, but might have somewhat the same audience. With the prestige of the Studs Lonigan books, this is interesting in revealing the same power, in more concentrated form. Not pleasant reading, nor written in light vein, but full of vitality, even while the stark realism beats you down. Not for the conservative audience.
