EMPIRE ON THE SEVEN SEAS

In September of 1938 the first volume of this history was published. Building the British Empire. That carried through the American Revolution, where this volume takes up the thread, bringing the history down to the accession of George VI. Momentous years, in which the empire stretched out tentacles into every part of the world, in which the Industrial Revolution precipitated internal readjustments almost more vital than the expansion of empire. Once again, Adams has given us history with the broad sweep of events, rather than the closer analysis of social and economic changes, or of personalities, other than as they are connected with the events. It is a thoroughly competent piece of historical writing, but not a book likely to get the popular reader interest of his American background histories. Excellent two volume history, however, which should take a permanent place on library shelves, public and private.
