Dr. Jim Turpin, founder and medical director of the ""international"" organization ""Project Concern,"" first wrote of his ambitious work' in Vietnam Doctor (1966) and this is essentially another plea for assistance from the general public as well as a review of recent projects. A former minister and private physician, Dr. Turpin founded Project Concern in 1961 and as he sees his organization, its primary battlegrounds are the wastelands of every nation where disease, poverty and illiteracy weaken and destroy. He recounts the organization's experiences with (lately) Appalachia, the slums of Hong Kong and Vietnam, Kentucky and Tijuana. Half a dozen other projects are included in Dr. Turpin's prospectus for the future, and although the effectiveness of individual efforts of this kind is always a matter of controversy, admirers of the late Tom Dooley might be further inspired by Dr. Turpin.
