DEATH FROM THE LADIES TEE

Despite a stronger opening situation and slicker moves than in Death is a Two-Stroke Penalty, Bartlett still doesn't seem to have the hang of the classic detective story. Here, sportswriter Pete Hacker is lured out of vacation to cover an LPGA tournament in Florida, only to find his natural distaste for the flat, marshy courses aggravated by the bulldozing tactics of LPGA Players Assn. President, Big Wyn Stillwell, who's been blackmailing both ``her girls'' on the tour and besotted LPGA commissioner Benton Burgmeister for their sexual peccadilloes, mostly with each other. Benton takes an easy out by getting killed, but there's never much question about who killed him- -though Hacker does have time for some likably abrasive face-offs with Big Wyn and an understated romance with a British pro. All the ingredients of an old-fashioned mystery, then, except for the mystery.
