KIRKUS REVIEW

Brief descriptions and clean sketchbook-like drawings of graders, backhoe/loaders, cranes, excavators, and other mobile construction giants. Adkins' early explanation of hydraulics is more abbreviated than elegant, and his general comments are flat; but his descriptions of individual machines should win some respect for the drivers and awe of the supergiants' stupendous dimensions. Ancona's photos of Monsters on Wheels (1974) have more style and impact; however, the subject's enduring appeal ensures an audience for this less spectacular entry as well.
