Jody Dowd is beset, as she comes of age in the little company town house she shares in a Southern mill town with her mother, sister, stepfather and grown step-brother, Marv. Forced to flight by the insistent and selfish attack of Marv, she runs away. Her companion on the road is an old acquaintance, Tay Brannon, young refugee from a tainted past. How they survive on the run and how they reach the decision to return makes for an interesting, occasionally exciting story. The neighborhood setting, with the mettlesome Gurney Dowd browbeating his family and the sympathetic old Mrs. Hackett, is genuine.
