THE SPORTSMAN'S COMPANION

Very specialized this- a reissue, with editorial notes by Jan Thornton, and contemporary sporting prints as illustrations, of a classic of anonymous source- The Sportsman's Companion, published in 1783, and still treasured by those who have access to the rare original. Sane and reliable practice and hints on guns, dogs, the points of fine sportsmanship with grouse, partridge, quail, woodcocks, snipe, and so on. This unknown sportsman was way ahead of his time in his view of training and treatment of hunting dogs, on the size of the game bag, on conservation principles. There's quaint advice on size of hunting parties, on fox hunting, on etiquette of the hunt, etc. A very special item for a special market.
