KIRKUS REVIEW

The Deep South, and the established codes of caste and chivalry, as mounting for the ironic, invidious career of Miss Abbie, whose desires for revenge and social recognition overrode any opposition she received. A petite modiste in Mobile, Abbie fell out of her class when she fell in love with Warren Shirley, could not marry him but succeeded in breaking up his intended marriage to Sally Carter. She came to Carter's Crossing and achieved an affair with Judge Carter, and eventually marriage. Even then she was denied acceptance, but with his death put over the will giving her control of his money, precipitating scandal and murder...For the ladies, a shrewd, seasoned story of a hellcat who got what she wanted.
