A BAD CONSCIENCE

That conscience which does make cowards of men like David Stair accounts for the fact that he lies to his wife and the police after sluttish Maeve, who cadged men, money and liquor, is found dead in his barn. He had seen her recently. But when he is charged with her murder, he escapes to establish another man's delayed double revenge. British middle class-middle class British of a reasonable competence and credibility, strongest at the outset.
