Any potential charm in the true-to-life story of Nikki, the little bear who was presented as a gift to the Princess of England, is quickly buried in tedious writing and obscured in Carol Barker's wooden illustrations. Nikki, an abandoned cub, is rescued by a zoo keeper and carried off to England from his own ""northern"" country. His gentle nature and playful spirit capture the hearts of the Prince and Princess and he spends his first day at Windsor Castle riding the swings, playing tag and romping with a new playmate. It is unfortunate too, that the reader is not told at the beginning instead of at the last moment that the story really happened.
