It's really very difficult to justify this book except as occupational therapy for the author who spent several months in a large California state institution, Estrelita. While there she made rather sketchy notes about others who shared her life on Ward 8; about their treatment, which seems humane if rather negligent; about shock therapy ""I have seen no possible justification for its use."" Be that as it may, it would be interesting to know a little more about Mrs. Doe (there is some flimsy mention of an earlier episode but no real knowledge of just why she was there) and sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between what is real or otherwise. She was a former writer in radio and television (out of work) and her professional skills seem minimal.
