Expanding the coterie begun with the Miss Boyds, Janet Alexander introduces the American Mrs. Secker, who recovering from her fourth marriage, is holidaying at Caribbean St. Jago. Janet, her husband, ""Twice"", the Dulacs and even young Sandy find little to like in the excessively irritating woman whose aim for a fifth husband sparks off trouble. From the activities at Paradise Plantation and its sugar cane, to the earthquake, bamboo fire and final hurricane, Janet reports the island doings, Mrs. Secker's unfriendly, unlikable behavior, and, with the murder of half-caste Linda Lee, is able to see her unwanted friend headed home. A picture of an ""ugly American"" as well as further investigation into life at St. Jago, this continues Janet's life story, with familiar, impulsive chatter, and loses some of the weaknesses of Sandy.
