KIRKUS REVIEW

The sweet pun of the title is reflected in this understated but engaging tale from Simmons (Daisy and the Egg, p. 229, etc.). Ebb, Flo’s dog, loves to sit in her favorite spot in the family fishing boat, until one day a goose nudges him aside. The friendly bird attracts all sorts of attention, even treats from Granny that used to go to Ebb. Ebb wishes the bird would fly away and not come back, but when that happens, Ebb discovers that he misses sharing his favorite spot, and doesn’t sleep well alone anymore. So the long summer goes on, and Ebb and Flo miss Bird mightily, but Bird does return, and a refrain begun on the first page, “things couldn’t have been better,” reappears, definitively, on the last. The simple text floats on full-page illustrations that capture Flo and her mother’s houseboat and the luminescence of the water. Edges are soft, the figures have button features, and Ebb and Bird are invested with rich personalities. (Picture book. 3-8)
