New readers have a treat in the Andy books and this one is no exception. An entirely possible story is pleasantly brushed with fantasy (Alice, the horse, talks commomsensically -- but only to herself). A few traffic do's and don't's are part of the story background as Andy moves through the downtown maze with his mother. Among all the cars and trucks, he meets and grows fond of an old cart horse. The story is easily told in big, clear print. All of it is generously and attractively supported by accurate traffic illustrations, drawn with humor. Young readers have already indicated that they think Andy is dandy. We always have, too.
