Children will readily sympathize with the little red deer's fear of the things he meets in the dark and his need for the comfortable presence of his mother as each night he sets off for the water hole to get a drink on his own. Each night hegets a little further and finally comes to the night when all that he has learned is behind him and he realizes that though he may not be bigger, he may be smarter than some other young animals who come to drink and there isn't to much to fear after all. It's a warm Bambi-ish story and the wash drawings (some in color) by W.T. Mars-are accurate representations of African animal life that do not minimize their innate savagery.
