INDIA: Old Land, New Nation

The two books listed below both follow the same organizational plan. They start with stories, include legends and describe the history of the respective countries. Village life, town and city life are discussed with village and farm life coming off best in terms of conveying the daily round and special habits of citizens of these countries. The vocabulary is within the easy grasp of third and fourth graders. Difficult words and place names are given phonetic pronunciations in parentheses. The books seem like good complements to geography text book presentations of India and Near Eastern countries. India is a better survey of Indian history and culture for this age level than was offered in A Pictorial History of India (1966, p. 8 -J8).
