HAWKSHEAD

Pub Date: Feb. 13th, 1975
Publisher: Doubleday

A wind-up gothic in which orphaned Devon arrives at Hawkshead (""in lonely splendor against the dark night sky"") to work as companion to young widowed Leticia, wan and pale. The characters sprout as predictably as toadstools after a rain: glowering, handsome Lord Davencourt (""broad shoulders strained against the fine fabric of his well-cut plum-colored coat""); the housekeeper, baleful as a shored haddock; a neighboring dandy; a vicious beauty pursuing Lord D.; etc. Devon is tailed, spied upon and just misses being crushed by a stone hurled from the parapet--unfortunately. Grade C with no surprises.
