HEAVEN ON EARTH

Again the childhood voices -- this time prattling on about summers in Northfield, the home of the Moody evangelicism, schools and, especially the Conferences. With her adoptive parents, the author knew visiting dignitaries of the church, missionaries from all over the world, writers, politicans, even a president of the United States (Teddy Roosevelt), and all sorts of Christian workers. She watched her father conduct the summer sessions, observed and noted how each and every person told his story, won his audience, and above and beyond which -- was a human being. There are miniatures of Wilson, Fosdick, Booker T. Washington and others -- along with the said, Carrie, the hired man, Will -- and the Reverend and Mrs. Henry Mable....There are family catastrophes -- the white birch among others -- there are religious difficulties along with large-scale picnics and revival meetings, there is the iron-souled life which had its richness and internationalism. A plus sale in the religious market, this will still have a gentle, nostalgic appeal for an older generation.
