A second outing for Detective Chief Inspector John McLeish of New Scotland Yard (Death's Bright Angel, 1988) and his love, the estimable Francesca Wilson of London's Department of Trade. While holidaying in Scotland, they rush to the aid of fallen climber Alan Fraser. Was he pushed? Perhaps, but when Alan later plummets from a scaffold on a London building site (he'd taken temporary work there to underwrite costs for a planned rock-climbing trek), McLeish officially steps in. Among the suspects is Alan's friend Mickey, a rival candidate for a place on the proposed K-6 expedition. But Alan may have been killed for another reason: major equipment stealing on the construction site. Who was in on it with him? McLeish's scrutiny turns to the Vernon family and ultimately separates the two crimes (murder and theft) and assigns blame to two culprits--both of whom, if they'd only waited, would have had no reason to commit their crimes (due to the generosity and fine intentions of their victims). Again, Francesca's business knowledge proves invaluable to McLeish, and' their courtship, though not precisely smooth, is appealing--as are the many singing Wilson brothers. Sophisticated, tart, and, in its own way, as pithy an explanation of various business practices as ever devised by Emma Lathen.
