FAMOUS HISPANIC AMERICANS

Brief biographies of 14 successful Hispanic-Americans, ranging from entertainers (Gloria Estefan, Andy Garcia) to businesspeople (Caroline Herrera), political figures (Antonia Novello), and others. Morey and Dunn (Famous Asian Americans, 1992, etc.) are more than admiring; each biography reads like a glorified r‚sum‚, listing one achievement or honor after another. Readers will not get to know any of the featured people as individuals, since their stories seem to boil down to one plot: After accomplishing great things through determination and hard work, each one gave back to the community, each is a paragon of virtue and grit, and each has advice on the value of education. Barbara Marvis's Famous People of Hispanic Heritage, Volume I (p. 1497) suffers from similar problems but still provides a more balanced view; this one covers more people.
