A clever notion for an alphabet book--in which each character takes an action affecting the next in succession--doesn't quite pan out. ""A is for Adelaide [a girl], who bothered Benny [a fish]. B is for Benny, who blew bubbles at Claudia [a nurse]."" So it goes; sometimes a good or bad turn provokes one similar in kind, but more often the relationship is tenuous, the sequence random. Stolidly bold, stylized illustrations depict such stock characters as a beloved milkmaid in a bonnet, a series of barnyard animals, and another series of second graders in costume, putting on a play. A final double spread sums it all up. Unmotivated; uninteresting.
