KIRKUS REVIEW

Janice Holland, author of They Built a City, the story of Washington D.C., draws well and writes well for her second book in the same vein- a picture history of Charleston, South Carolina. Chronologically arranged texts outline the development of Charleston, taking for a first event the arrival of a particular family of English settlers 12 years after the town was founded. The story continues on through Indian wars, plantation developments, the Revolutionary War, Charleston's cultural influence, the Civil War, and present day Charleston.
