THE GREAT ADVENTURE

This one is about Joe Fowler; he's the grandson of Hannah Fowler and this is part of Mrs. Giles' long serie of pioneer-frontier novels which have been going on for quite a spell and which actually are based on a very respectable amount of research. Joe's a mountain man and trapper who has signed on with Driant, from St. Louis, and the story itself chaws its way through ""hard trackin"" country out of Taos west. Driant's a sick man and he dies en route; there are other casualties, three actually at the hands of one man which Joe will eventually avenge; finally he hooks up with Bonneville to track all the way to the Columbia. The West is changing, so is the mountain man's life as the carrying trade is gone, beaver is gitting skeerce, etc. but Joe's not through with it or with Betsy, his squaw.... This hyar aint much of a yarn but the fixin's genu-ine and we ain't saying much. We cain't. We said it all afored and we're all tuckered out.
