There are few writers of whom one can say that there are fifty- and more- stories that are still reckoned among the best short stories ever written. Unfortunately, too many people today have never known what a superb short story teller Kipling was. As Jarrell says- they remember the things that are not true. For those to whom Kipling is still unknown and except for his Just Stories, The Jungle Books. Puck of Pook's Hill, etc. he is unknown to most young people today, who think of him as a teller of tales to children-here is a chance to discover for themselves. For those of us who have never forgotten his magic here in a chance to recapture it. A varied magic it is, too -- ranging from stories that are drawn from his own colorful background, to stories that tap the core of his tender understanding of children, to some of the best of tales of animals, to adventure and imagination. Many long remembered favorited are here:- Without Benefit of Clergy. The Phantom's Rickshaw, The Man Who Would Be King. Baa Baa Black Sheep. The Maltese Cat. Kaa's Hunting. The Village That Vated the Earth Was Flat, etc., etc. (Probably, the Table of Contents alone will revive earlier tattered and torn volumes). And how well they reread today.
