NEHRU ON GANDHI

This is an editorial selection taken from the writings of Nehru over several decades and referring to perhaps the most famous revolutionary of our day, Gandhi, when he knew intimately, admired idealistically rather than ideologically...Through these excerpts one sees Gandhi, the man of the people who represented the ancient tradition of India- asceticism and renunciation, his fearlessness, charm and persuasive power. The political programs of non- cooperation and passive resistance; the launching of the National Congress; the suspension (regretted by Nehru) of civil resistance; the ""fast unto death"" of 1932 and those subsequent to it; the conflict between his basic belief in non-violence and his desire to cooperate with the British; his death...Both testimonial and tribute, this at intervals includes some criticism of the political position he has at times assumed, but in the main is eloquent appreciation.
