Conlon, thrown off the police force after an accidental shooting of a friend, is asked to help another loser, Helen Mathews, a streetwalker, who is hung with a by no means picture-pretty frame: she is to be accused of rolling and killing a man. Conlon hides her and finds the facts (about a Coney Island mobster; about a shrewish wife) which will give her another chance.... An audit of an obit which derives a certain sympathy from grubby circumstances and its action from grim determination. As such, satisfactory.
