Jay Bennett has written mysteries (for adults) which is essentially what this is although you'll be halfway through before realizing it. And all the way submerged in the hard sell, soft soap presentation of Danny, Danny boy--he's fatherless; his tired, quiet mother's a librarian; his teacher calls him a loner and bugs him on his Van Gogh assignment; his mother says ""Part of you is always locked away. Nobody ever touches it."" and Danny feels ""that something is closing in on me."" Actually it's the theft of the Van Gogh by a couple called Collingwood and the murder of MrS. Collingwood and their attempt to involve Danny. . . . Fade. . . . ""Leaves. Falling leaves."" And time for the COPE commercial.
