FOUR AGES OF MAN

Another retelling of the classical mythic, this one aimed at the teenage audience and simply illustrated with black and white drawings taken from authentic classical sources. Unlike the D'Aulaire Book of Greek Myths (reviewed in the last issue- p. 974 J-286- for a younger age group and limited to stories of the Greek gods and goddesses) this encompasses a broader scope. Beginning with mythology concerned with creation, this goes on to seasonal categories (spring and winter) with stories of Hyacinthus, Narelssus and Orpheus, the loves of the Gods and Metamorphoses, the Heroes, myths of the royal house of Thebes, the tale of Troy, Cupid and Psyche, and in conclusion, the passing and afterlife of the gods. Without benefit of dialogue, the approach is descriptive and the effect, pleasant and rhythmic. Certainly no substitute for the original, this might be used as a teaser for fuller renditions.
