Familiar verses (""Jack and Jill,"" ""Humpty Dumpty"") are combined with a selection of memorable songs in this fresh interpretation. A helpful introduction explains the meaning of a rebus and the best way for parents to share the contents with a child. Marzollo has chosen a group of short, easy-to-read rhymes and songs, attractively reproduced in large type. Nearly every line has a rebus and some have several. Old-fashioned engravings combine nicely with the artist's small pencil drawings. Children of all ages will find these verses a welcome variation to standard nursery-rhyme books widely available. The device of incorporating rebuses, particularly those found in the old print-shops, makes for an unusual presentation. This is a handsome treasury, which includes favorite pieces from English and American collections.
