A first novel developed in patterns of living in sober inquiry, highlighted by artistic responses of the characters. A grave, reasonable novel of artists and the art of living, as personified in David, ambitious, selfish, wanting only the fame and eminence of achievement that music can bring, and in Lena, the real genius, who discovers that marriage, a husband and children mean more to her than her music. David cheats to win the coveted study in Vienna, but finds no inner growth. His marriage has been violated by his egocentricity; his wife dies when their son is born. But he realizes what he and his associates have missed in life only when he visits Lena and sees how truly she has enriched life. Somewhat monotonous handling.
