An engaging, offbeat story about a grouch who's beguiled by a cat. When Horace P. Blumpoe's car breaks down during a journey to see his sister, he's forced to put up at an unusual hotel--one where each guest gets to choose a feline companion for the night. Blumpoe declines; but the one unchosen cat--scrawny, shy Arnold--decides it's time for a character change, seeks out Blumpoe, and manages, after an initial slapstick confrontation, to charm Blumpoe by wanning his feet. Predictable, of course, but entertainingly told and made even funnier by Schneider's cheerful, cartoon-like illustrations.
