Roslyn, in spite of her mother's uneasiness followed by her own recurrent bad dream, returns to the town her parents had left in her infancy following an undiscussable episode. Now through frightened people (her uncle, an old dollmaker), through innuendos, through the opal ring she wears which goes back to. . . this story moves right along with some mystery here, suspense there, and it's told in a believably modern present tense without any of the faint-brained inclinations of the genre.
