A YARDSTICK FOR JESSICA

Being too short is a great trial to eleven and three-quarters year old Jessica Roberts. She competes with eight-year-old Jill and four-year-old Jonathan for the attention of physician father, dabbling artist mother, and wholesome good cook, their Scottish housekeeper. Keeping her room neat, making a success of the lead in a French play, babysitting, and attending a first concert where she has her photograph taken with the pianist are somewhat unbelievable activities for a sixth grader who also expresses an inappropriate concern for nylon stockings, heels and her figure. The attempt to show the development of more mature values and responsibilities is hampered by awkward dialogue and stereotyped characters.
