A famous French geographer has written this geography of Europe for Americans, but it is sure to be of worldwide value. Here is geography in terms of national environment, historical background, social and economic setting, as well as physical and geological aspects familiar in standard geographies. Without becoming partisan or political, he has managed to keep objectivity and perspective, while supplying the reasons for political pressures today. A small continent, Europe provides infinite variety, breaking down into two major divisions, the western maritime part opposed to the eastern continental part - with both offering basis for European unity beyond its territorial continuity. He discusses population pressures, standards of living, open vs closed economy, regional differences, the basic factors determining development in boundaries, mountains, rivers, harbors, natural resources, etc. The text is supplemented by maps where necessary and a great many fine photographs which expand the descriptive value of the text. While not pedantic either in style or format, the content makes it admirable high school and college material.
