The garden-loving homeowner with limited time, and funds, would do well to study this practical garden book, although the uninformed beginner may find the assumptions in terminology and procedures difficult without an accompanying primer. The gardener who knows the hard way and wants to cut back will find some questions unanswered. But the owner of the new home, who already has some gardening know-how, will find it cut to his measure. First the appraisal of your particular bit of land; then the recommendation to reduce lawn and expand meadow, and add to the meadow's delight all sorts of available things from your region; then permanent improvement of your soil; whether for lawn or garden. Mulch and more mulch is basic in all her advice, and the how and where and when are discussed in each phase of gardening,-the shady dell, the brookside path, the tiny winter garden near the doorway, the fern garden, the few ""indestructibles"", the annuals that reproduce themselves, the vegetable garden, shrubs, trees, planting for the birds, vies, fruits,- all done the easiest way for long term profit and enjoyment. There are wonderful lists, carefully annotated with pertinent information.
