THE SAND, THE SEA, AND ME

By

Pub Date: July 25th, 1972

Benign seaside verses ranging from the lightness of Lillian Moore's ""Until I Saw the Sea"" to the frothiness of ""It's chowder for dinner, it's chowder, hooray! Look at the clam that I dug up today"" to the stickiness of Myra Cohn Livingston's ""Seaweed"" -- ""gummy on my tummy, slippery on my feet."" The gentle, hazy washes of blue and orange have a properly watery texture, but only the most docile beachcombers will find something worth treasuring in lines such as Rachel Field's ""I'd like to be a lighthouse / With the ships all watching me."" Like those seashells you accumulate during a day at the shore, a collection of transitory interest.
