GRANDMOTHER'S SECRETS: Her Green Guide to Health From Plants

As the saying goes, ""God has always put the cure alongside the ill"" -- so it's not surprising to find Hawkweed, used for treating infectious abortion in cattle and sheep, growing abundantly alongside grazing grass. But which came first? Maybe some things simply shouldn't be analyzed too dosely. Like why is it that Lungwort -- which looks exactly like a diseased lung -- is an effective medicine for just that condition. Or why thyme which is so good on carrots is just as beneficial for menstrual disorders. Or the mystery of dandelion fluff -- a sure way to determine how long you'll wait to find a husband. The only thing we know for certain is that for the gathering of herbs certain rituals must be observed: dry, sunny days are best and only during those seasons that are attuned to the rhythrm of the cosmos. Herb lore -- with information on preserving, storing, etc. -- that's as soothing and restorative as perfectly steeped tea.
