A Fortune reporter's survey of the imperilled, isolated region whose importance in our war against Japan, in our war on the side of Russia, has been tardily acknowledged. Based on intensive interviewing, this is an incisive, documented digest of the country as she is -- and as she will be. The arming of Alaska, base building, air fields, roads -- not specific enough to help the enemy -- discussed as difficult accomplishments against physical odds. The lack of population, the undeveloped resources, the laissez-faire attitude of the people, added to a too casual colonial policy balanced against Alaska's value strategically, for the offensive attack on Japan. Good job and of immediate interest.
