KIRKUS REVIEW

A wonderful collection of nine previously unpublished, chilling tales by distinguished British writers. In "The Spring," Peter Dickinson writes about 11-year-old Derek, who discovers his twin in an ancient spring, takes him home for a year, and then chooses to go into the spring with him forever. Adele Geras ("We'll Meet Again. . .") tells the tale of Maddy, a college girl who wears a dead woman's 1940's-style coat--and discovers that "love was indeed. . .stronger than death." In Alison Prince's "The Charmer," there are a spooked cat, a girl who's obsessed by memories of her father, lost at sea five years ago, and a handsome stranger who comes to board with her and her mother--with fatal results. And who is who in Jane Gardam's tale ("Bang, Bang--Who's Dead?") of a family buying (or haunting?) an old house? Well-conceived stories, intriguing and sure to delight those who ponder the boundaries of the real and supernatural worlds. A winner.
